Outsource VAG coding as a garage or dealer

Carro Automotive handles VAG coding for garages and dealers that want to outsource it, activating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda with MIB2/MIB2.5, and on the Audi A1, A3, Q2, Q3 and TT. The software version is checked first. The work is done at Stavorenweg 4 in Gouda, with a 2-year warranty.

Challenges

Challenges

  1. 01

    Platform-specific expertise

Every infotainment platform needs its own approach. MIB2 and MIB2.5 can be coded through the OBD port; MIB3 cannot be handled the same way. On Audi models, the adaptation channels sometimes differ from Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda.

  2. 02

    Risk of coding errors

Not every software version accepts the coding. That is why the version is checked beforehand. The existing coding is saved before any change, so the original state can be restored.

  3. 03

Fitting it around your own workshop

Your own technicians already have a full schedule. You bring the car to Gouda, or a fixed block is scheduled for several cars. An activation takes 15 to 30 minutes on average.

Outsourced coding: what Carro Automotive does for garages

Many Volkswagen, Seat, Skoda and Audi models with an MIB2 or MIB2.5 system already have the hardware for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on board. The feature is locked in the software. Carro Automotive activates it through the OBD port, without any physical changes to the car.

The result works like a factory option: CarPlay appears in the menu as soon as an iPhone is connected via USB. The original screen stays in place.

Where activation is not possible, for example on older systems such as the RNS 510/RCD 510 or RNS 310/315, or on MIB1 (early Golf 7 generation), the alternative is a CarPlay module behind the original screen (from €249) or a new screen (from €199).

  • Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda with MIB2 or MIB2.5 (roughly from model year 2015–2016; for earlier cars, the software version is decisive)
  • Audi A1, A3, Q2, Q3 and TT
  • Apple CarPlay and, where the system supports it, Android Auto
  • Reversible to the original coding

02

How a job works

For each car, you pass on the make, model, year and software version. The version is shown in the infotainment menu under system information, after 'SW'. If in doubt, a photo of that screen or the VIN is enough.

You then bring the car to the workshop at Stavorenweg 4 in Gouda, or a block is scheduled for several cars. The existing coding is saved before the change. After activation, CarPlay is tested with a phone.

03

What to tell your customers

Older MIB2 cars, especially from 2016 and earlier, often have an MDI connector instead of a standard USB port. CarPlay then requires a USB upgrade.

A dealer software update can reset the coding to the factory setting, for example during servicing or a recall. The feature can then be activated again. The activation itself carries a 2-year warranty.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Which cars can be activated?

Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda with an MIB2 or MIB2.5 system, plus the Audi A1, A3, Q2, Q3 and TT. That roughly covers models from model year 2015–2016 up to the arrival of MIB3; for earlier cars, the software version is decisive. It is always checked in advance.

Can an MIB3 system be activated as well?

No, not with standard OBD coding. On most MIB3 systems, such as in the Golf 8 and Octavia 4, CarPlay is already active as standard or a different procedure is needed. These cars are assessed case by case.

Can the coding be reversed?

Yes. The existing coding is saved before the change, so the original state can be restored. No physical changes are made to the car.

What happens after a dealer software update?

An update can reset the coding to the factory setting. The feature can then be activated again. A reset caused by a dealer update is not covered by the activation warranty. Within 2 years of the first activation, the car is reactivated at a reduced rate on proof of the dealer visit.

What does activation cost for a garage?

Volume pricing is available on request. As a guide, the consumer price starts at €120 for Volkswagen, Seat and Skoda and at €150 for Audi, including installation. Audi costs more because its coding often involves more steps.
